Live phytoplankton is the basic building block of the ocean food chain. It adds biodiversity to your tank and feeds corals, clams, copepods and other filter feeders. The copepods and other microfauna which feed on our live phytoplankton will in turn become food for your fish and corals. Live phytoplankton, and the microfauna it supports, contribute greatly to the health and stability of your reef.

Our live phytoplankton blend contains six different strains of phyto to provide balanced and well rounded nutrition for your tank’s inhabitants. Corals are like all other animals - they need a wide variety of minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids for optimal health. Simply feeding one or two species of phytoplankton won’t provide the diversity of nutrients that our six species blend offers.

We recommend checking out our dosing guide to determine how much and frequently to dose for your unique needs. Our phytoplankton should be stored in the refrigerator and given a gentle shake every couple days. If stored like this, it should last at least two months.

What do I do if my live phytoplankton starts to smell?

Our live phytoplankton is a blend of six different species, and several of those species can release very "smelly" chemicals over time. A bad smell isn't necessarily a problem.

To determine if your phytoplankton has gone bad, leave the cap off for about an hour (to let built-up odors dissipate) and then smell it. Phytoplankton which is still good may smell like grass, ocean, cooked broccoli, seafood, or a sickly-sweet pungent smell.

If your phytoplankton is going bad, it will smell like rotten eggs or rotting skimmate. Please discontinue dosing and contact us - if you bought your live phytoplankton from us in the last two months then it qualifies for free replacement under our Dinkins Delivery Guarantee!
